As part of this course, students will learn how to work with found object art and engage in critical inquiry. During this course, we will examine the relationship between people and the material world, including buildings, objects, and landscapes, to gain a better understanding of past-present societies and cultures. As part of the project, students will source their objects, then deconstruct the object and reconstruct it into a new form. There will be a wide variety of tools and shop equipment used to transform these sculptures. The course will also examine the work of national and global native and Indigenous artists that use found object art responding to their environments, culture or based on economic necessity. Students will create two sculpture projects and one research essay project.
In/Justice Students should expect to spend 6-8 hours weekly on work and preparation outside of class time
