Joint Faculty Appointments
Joint faculty members are based on one campus with teaching responsibilities on multiple campuses.
More than 80 Jointly Appointed Faculty -- in at least 33 different fields -- have served in visiting, three-year, or tenure track appointments since 1948. Five College Jointly Appointed Faculty are recognized for their work in supporting collaborative academic programs across the campuses and supporting the five institutions in the maintenance and development of their curricula. The commitment of Five College Joint Faculty to working cooperatively across the campuses strengthens the intellectual communities and curricula at their home campuses and throughout the consortium.
Joint appointees are based at a single campus, which is the position’s home campus, and many teach at one or more other campuses on a rotating basis. The procedures of the position's home campus and department govern the review and promotion process, with input from the other campuses sharing in the position. Joint appointments are generally tenure track or continuing. Tenure rates for those appointed to joint tenure-track positions compare very favorably with the tenure rates for those appointed to tenure-track positions based fully at a single campus.
Faculty members holding joint appointments have enriched scholarship and creative work and teaching at the member campuses for more than 70 years. Among those who have served as Jointly Appointed Professors are James Baldwin, Joseph Brodsky, and Pearl Primus. Please see below for a list of current Jointly Appointed Faculty, with areas of expertise across a wide variety of academic fields.
