(Offered as ENGL 251 and FAMS 251) From the ubiquity of selfies to the drama of true crime, the practice of documenting reality is endlessly fascinating and influential. This course explores the tradition of documentary filmmaking—an art form that has sparked debates, shaped industries, and transformed worldviews since the dawn of cinema. Famously described by filmmaker John Grierson as “the creative treatment of actuality,” documentaries challenge us to ask: What does it mean to capture reality? Can film not only reflect the world but also change it? Our journey will begin with a field trip to the Camden International Film Festival in Maine (September 11-14, 2025), immersing students in the dynamic world of contemporary documentary. Through weekly theatrical screenings, lectures, and discussions, students will explore the vast spectrum of documentary film and media—from poetic and personal essays to investigative exposés and experimental works. We will examine the ethical dilemmas filmmakers face, the expectations of audiences, and the aesthetic innovations that make documentary a force to reckon with. Guest visits from filmmakers and industry professionals will provide behind-the-scene insights.

Limited to 18 students. Fall semester. Professor Rangan.

How to handle overenrollment: If overenrolled, preference given to English and FAMS majors.

Students who enroll in this course will likely encounter and be expected to engage in the following intellectual skills, modes of learning, and assessment: Weekly readings and theatrical screenings of feature-length and short films; field trip to a film festival; a range of in-class activities (mini-lectures, close readings of films, group discussions, engagement with guest speakers); regular writing assignments (reading responses, textual analysis, argument-driven essays). Students who take this course need to commit to attending the Camden International Film Festival (September 11-14, 2025).
