There are two types of paid summer research opportunities available through Five College Coastal & Marine Sciences. Each of the two internship categories listed below has its own application requirements and deadlines, so read carefully. Seniors may apply only to the Marine Biological Laboratory internships.
1. Five College Funded Summer Research Internships offer students enrolled in the five colleges support for summer research positions at approved marine laboratories. Juniors are given priority during selection, and seniors are not eligible.

Project sites include:
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration
Students have worked at various NOAA labs and field sites all over the United States including North Carolina, Texas, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, New Jersey, and Maryland. Internship opportunities include participating in research on marine mammals, seagrass, salt marsh ecology and restoration, and fish biology and ecology. Interns have the opportunity to gain valuable experience working in a research lab, performing data analysis, helping perform fieldwork from small boats, and participating on research cruises on NOAA ships. The program awards $ 3,800 for a ten-week period (housing not provided).
Wells National Estuarine Research Reserve
This 200-acre research reserve is adjacent to 2000 acres of salt marsh and estuary, including the Little, Webhannet, and Ogunquit Rivers. Wells is located on the south coast of Maine, between Portsmouth, NH and Portland, ME. Resarch includes wading birds as marsh health indicators, food web/climate change interactions, salt marsh restoration, and native/invasive herbivore interactions. The reserve is equipped with a new research lab and public education facility. The program awards $ 2,500 for a ten-week period. Free housing is available in a newly renovated on-site dormitory.
2. Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL)at Woods Hole
The Marine Biological Laboratory provides the opportunity for undergraduates to carry out research in most areas of marine science at Woods Hole, Massachusetts. As members of the Woods Hole Marine Science Consortium (WHMSC), Five Colleges students are eligible for these exclusive internships, which may involve intensive lab and field research, presentation of a talk, submission of a manuscript for publication,or animal care and culturing. The program awards $ 2,500 for a ten-week period, and housing is provided. Seniors are encouraged to apply.
