RE: DEDCC Annual Report, FY2004
This is the DEDCC’s second full year of operation, and we have scaled back our activities, due in large part to the ILS Selection Committee’s work. We generally met monthly this year. We had two replacements on DEDCC, as Julie Boisselle and Jay Shafer moved on to new responsibilities at Mount Holyoke and UMass; they were replaced by Janet Ewing and Leslie Button respectively. We look forward to working with Janet and Leslie.
• XML Workshop – We invited two librarians to discuss XML in the context of Five College Libraries. Amy Benson from Nelinet gave a broad overview of what XML is and why librarians should care, while Kelcy Shepherd from UMass talked about her use of XML in the Five College Finding Aids project. Feedback from our library colleagues indicates that this workshop was a great success.
• Provided input to the ILSSC on four ILS vendor options focusing on context-sensitive linking, federated searching, digital object management, electronic resource management, and reports.
• We worked to enhance access to electronic resources, including:
o Monitored the consortial implementation of SFX.
o Discussed how our five institutions are making proprietary resources available to off-campus students in their classes (i.e., Hampshire gives semester-long “dummy” password for LDAP).
o Recommended an implementation committee for the launch of MetaLib.
o Decided to retain TDNet for another year.
o Discussed what our five institutions are doing to make streaming music available to students. We will investigate this further in fy05.
o Coordinated with RIO to implement minor modifications to the online catalog, including linking location codes to information about that location. We plan to turn on cross-linking between UMass and Four College catalog for “View Record/ Renew Items” feature as well.
• We hope to explore the following in fy05:
o Coordinate informal brown bag lunches to disseminate information about many library-related topics, including new features of SFX and MetaLib.
o Work with colleagues to set up and maintain library committee web pages hosted at Five Colleges. See DEDCC example at http://www.fivecolleges.edu/sites/libraries_dedcc/.
o Assist with Five College projects such as the ILS implementation process as needed.
