Meeting Notes > Annual Reports 07/01/2005 TO: Five College Library Directors This is the DEDCC’s third full year of operation, and our biggest accomplishment was the inauguration of bi-monthly brown bag lunches. We also started a Five College librarians / staff mailing list, and we began work towards a possible collaborative digital object management project across the Five Colleges. • Brown Bag lunches. We organized six brown bag lunches this year. Our first session was a discussion of what we learned at the 2004 Ex Libris’ SFX and MetaLib user group meeting and a presentation of Ex Libris’ MARCit product. Our second session covered patron privacy issues with electronic databases and other online material. Our third session, a joint effort between DEDCC and the Collection Management Committee, featured a presentation from the Library Dynamics company about their collection assessment product. In February, we had a session on three different “hot” technologies (RFID, blogs, and CONTENTdm), while in May, we had a session describing FRBR. Finally, in June, we co-sponsored a presentation on web site usability with the RIO committee. Attendance at these sessions ranged from 15-30 and feedback from our colleagues was quite positive. We have several suggestions for topics for next year, including a second update from the 2005 Ex Libris user group meeting (incorporating both NAAUG and SMUG), Google Scholar, and a review of XML. • Digital Object Management. DEDCC initiated discussion about cross-functional and cross-institutional collaboration on a digital object / asset management program. To that end, we created a small working group to plan a July 2005 retreat at which the issues will be identified and discussed. If there is consensus among the constituencies, we will encourage that a Five College Task Force be created to continue the discussion and possibly collaborate. • Other Electronic Activities. We have accomplished some modest goals as well, including the creation of a Five College libraries email list and the start of a more substantive Five Colleges web presence for library committees with a secure location for meeting notes (see http://www.fivecolleges.edu/sites/libraries_dedcc/). Additionally, we participated in the ILS Selection Committee’s work, and we provided FCLC with an inventory of what access the libraries provide to networks and electronic library resources to Five College students. • MARCit is an Ex Libris product which would add MARC records to the catalog based on the electronic serials holdings listed in SFX. DEDCC encourages the Five College libraries to purchase this product. In summary, DEDCC was productive this year, filling its mission of educating colleagues about electronic products and exploring new library technology. More Information download file > | |
