DEDCC minutes – Meeting 08/05/09
At Five Colleges, Inc.
Attendees: Emily Alling, Janet Ewing, David Podboy, Kelcy Shepherd, Mary Stettner (notetaker), Rebecca Henning.
Absent: Rachel Beckwith, Chris Loring
Updates:
• WorldCat Local: Emily reported that there isn’t much new happening. UMass will likely do a soft launch in the Fall, leaving more substantial promotion for later on. Adding metasearch functionality has been pushed back to October and only OCLC products will be available at first.
Schedule for Fall Meetings was set for the following Tuesdays from 3-4:30 pm:
• September 15
• October 13
• November 10
• December 8
Review of draft of email to FCLC regarding Discovery Tools
• The committee discussed David’s draft of a letter to FCLC asking for clarification about their proposal for forming a new functional committee for OPAC/discovery tools since discovery tools would seem to fall within DEDCC’s charge. A few revisions were suggested which David will incorporate then email the final letter to FCLC tomorrow morning.
Review of draft of revised charge
• Committee members added comments and suggestions to a copy of the old charge on Google docs between this meeting and the last. David integrated those comments into a revised draft that the committee reviewed today. Rebecca added today’s edits to the document. Everyone will review the edited charge and make any necessary additions or changes by 5pm tomorrow, after which time David will send the final version to FCLC for their consideration.
Discovery tools project
We discussed the following products:
o Deep Web Explorit
o WebFeat
o LibraryFind
o Primo
o Encore/Research Pro
o EBSCO
o Summon
o eXtensible catalog
o WorldCat metasearch
Next steps:
Due to the fact that some of these products are still evolving so we don’t have all the information we’d like about them and that we’re still waiting on FCLC’s decision about where this discovery tools investigation belongs (with DEDCC or the proposed new committee), it was decided to revisit a smaller list of discovery tools in November or later. The tools we’ll continue to follow are:
• WebFeat – Rebecca
• Primo – Mary (taking over for David)
• Encore/Research Pro – David
• EBSCO – David
• Summon – Janet
• eXtensible catalog – Emily
• WorldCat Metasearch – Kelcy
o Other things to keep in mind/fuel for future discussion: Emily will be leading a NERCOMP SIG on discovery tools for libraries in February. This event will probably have vendor or customer demos. She will confirm the date/location information about that event and send it to everyone. Janet also suggested that, while reviewing these tools, we may want to consider the philosophy of each product. For example, should we support a library-initiated, collaborative project like eXtensible catalog? The topic of open source and the real cost of supporting open source products vs proprietary was brought up by multiple people. Considering how much time, manpower, and money has gone into customizing Aleph, would it really be more time consuming or expensive to support an open source product? Quote of the day from Emily: “The only way to stay with the times is to buy people not products.”
Digital Preservation Project
• Discussion of this topic was postponed till next meeting.
