DEDCC Minutes - Meeting 07/15/09
at Five Colleges, Inc
Attendees: Emily Alling, Janet Ewing, Chris Loring, David Podboy, Kelcy Shepherd (notetaker), Mary Stettner
Absent: Rachel Beckwith, Rebecca Henning
Updates:
• WorldCat Local: Emily reported that the resources sharing pieces of the BCL project are not coming together as soon as originally thought. The BLC launch was today, but the UMass point person expects the UMass implementation to be ready later, perhaps in late September. David mentioned that there is a committee at Smith to look at WorldCat Local Quick Start, and that he is chairing the group. They’re still not through testing.
• Digital Preservation: At David’s request, Kelcy contacted the chair of the Five College archivists’ committee to learn more about what they are doing related to digital preservation. The archivists were asked to submit a problem statement on electronic records, but the chair expressed interest in having a conversation about the larger issue of digital preservation. Chris mentioned that FCLC’s request for a problem statement may have morphed and that he would like to see a larger conversation about digital preservation. David asked if it would make sense to send 1-2 DEDCC members to an archivists’ meeting. We will discuss more next time.
• FCLC: Chris reported that FCLC will be setting up a new group that will be responsible for the OPAC, and that DEDCC and RIO will each continue independently but will not have to deal with the OPAC, Syndetics, etc. It is possible that there could be some overlap, particularly with discovery tools, but the charge is not yet written. FCLC agreed on the new group in principle but didn’t nail down which group will be responsible for what.
FCLC Response to Our Recommendations on DEDCC’s Charge
• The committee discussed FCLC’s feedback on DEDCC’s questions about our role, and our charge in relation to other group’s work. We agreed that it would be useful to look at our charge so that we can make suggestions for revision to FCLC. This will be added to the agenda for next meeting.
Meeting Review – Deferred
Federated Search Project
• David suggested we change the focus from federated search to overarching discovery tools, which slims down our list of products. We can create a spreadsheet with features in Google docs and compare these products. The end goal will be to identify 2-3 products that we’d like to explore more by bringing in vendors or implementers, then look into the possibility of implementation if there is money and interest. All agreed with this plan. Members were assigned specific products to review:
o KS WorldCat Local
o JE Summon
o EA eXtensible Catalog
o DP Primo, Research Pro, Ebsco
o MS DeepWeb
o RH LibFind, WebFeat
Action Items:
• KS forward electronic records problem statement.
• DP create charge document on Google docs.
• Everyone contributed to charge document.
• MS create discovery tool feature spreadsheet in google docs.
• Everyone review their assigned software.
Topics for Next Meeting: Digital preservation, charge, schedule fall meetings, meeting review, discovery tools.
