DEDCC Minutes
April 15, 2009 at Five Colleges

Attendees: Emily Alling, Rachel Beckwith, Janet Ewing, Rebecca Henning (minutes), David Podboy, Kelcy Shepherd, and Mary Stettner.

Updates:
No FCLC update.
WorldCat Local – Kelcy reported that the “go live” date for BLC sharing is still July 1st, even though more information about the “metasearch” capabilities will not be available until mid-June. Of interest: OCLC just signed a deal with EbscoHost.

Housekeeping:
Next meeting dates were set, all at 3:00pm to 4:30pm:
June 3, July 15, August 19. [the July and August meetings will be at Five Colleges, the June meeting location will be at Mount Holyoke]

AquaBrowser:
While Janet was at ACRL, AquaBrowser rep Jeff Riedel met with her to present updated information and quotes on the product. He is offering to work out a plan whereby the four colleges sign on with AB, they work with the data of the full five college ILS, and we only pay what would have been our share in the most recent proposal. AB would forego the 4/11ths that UMass would have paid of that total quote. They would, however, work out some way to limit functionality on the UMass campus so that UMass wasn’t really getting AB for free. After discussion, we agreed that the changes were not enough to pursue. Our original view of AB as a ‘bridge’ product between our current situation and some future “federated-search-like” product seems less likely, given the changing economic and technological situation.

Syndetics:
We discussed the new price quote that David received. Reducing the package to 3 elements will save approximately ,000. Emily raised the question of whether that money could instead be used toward Librarything? Renewal is due in June. We recommend the 3 elements instead of nine, but would still like to see the statistics that Syndetics have not yet sent. David will call them again about this. We discussed possibly asking the AMC to investigate other book cover options during the coming year.

Joint meeting with RIO:
We discussed our current charge, and that the FCLC is planning to re-evaluate some of the Five College committees’ charges in the coming months. Our next meeting (5/20) will be a joint meeting with RIO to discuss both committee’s charges and projects. We also plan to use the 6/3 meeting to discuss changes to our charge and make recommendations to FCLC.

Diane Hillmann presentation:
Currently 53 people registered. Due to the strong turnout we feel there is no need to advertise to groups beyond the Five Colleges. Rebecca will make dinner arrangements and the 5C Cataloging committee will make lunch arrangements.
