DEDCC 12/17/08
Present: David Podboy, Rachel Beckwith, Mary Stettner, Janet Ewing, Emily Alling (minutes taker), Rebecca Henning, Kelcy Shepherd. Absent: Chris Loring.
No FCLC update this time.
WorldCat Local: Kelcy attended a webinar on WorldCat Local last Friday. The webinar was a basic overview for all staff at institutions that are implementing WCL. Three phases of the implementation process have been identified:
Phase 1: Get each institution up and running (February)
Phase 2: BLC resource sharing phase; circulation integration (April?)
Phase 3: Metasearch (June)
Supposedly, libraries can form connections with other vendors and include their holdings in metasearch. This was the first that many people had heard of this. Focus so far has been on reconciling institutional holdings with WorldCat. The webinars are archived, but require software download to view.
Question: is anything being done yet with the depository? Answer: not sure.
No conversations yet about how we envision WCL will be deployed/used (resource sharing only? OPAC replacement? single search box for books & articles?).
Five College Libraries Website review: ongoing. Outdated guide has been taken down from website. David will review the site and report on what he finds at our next meeting. The Five College library committees are listed under FCLC on the site, and that seems like a strange place for them.
Future of Cataloging Workshop: Catalog Committee will co-sponsor and is enthusiastic. Rebecca will contact Diane Hillmann to see what she charges. Archive of presentation is at http://www3.nelinet.net/education/seminar/archives/dh08
Future meetings:
January 21
February 18
March 11
April 15
May 20
All times 3:00-4:30, Five Colleges (pending confirmation of location [David])
Unconference: Library Camp NYC is taking place June 3, which is very close to the date we had been looking at (May 29). What type of an event would we want to hold? A true unconference might be too unpredictable. Setting up an unconference format but pre-populating some of the schedule with invited speakers might be a compromise. More of a traditional conference might suit some of our needs better. With the cataloging workshop slated for spring, we could possibly hold off on this conference until fall. The Red Barn does seem like a good venue for an unconference. The Hampshire Dining Commons is closed during late May/early June. The question of generating ideas vs. delivering information came up. Possible topics discussed at today's meeting:
Consolidation of technical services?
Content management systems?
Supporting student digital media production
Digital scholarship/faculty
Next-generation ILSs (as opposed to just front ends)
We could do a survey similar to the one done prior to the Next Gen Catalogs conference, to gauge what topics and time frames would be of interest. Mary will try to dig out the survey from the last conference to see what topics were suggested then, which can inform the current survey. Can we have the new survey out & have responses back by the 21st? We will try to send it out by January 12, with a reminder to be sent on the 19th. DEDCC members should send Mary ideas for topics by January 9. We can look back at the minutes from our last couple of meetings, which contain a transcription of the flip chart notes where we have been considering topics. Janet will research what other conferences are taking place from roughly May-August to help us determine possible times. Emily will come up with a question for the survey regarding preferences as far as format (unconference; traditional; etc.) and send it around to the group by the 9th.
Federated searching: Things to do between now and our next meeting:
Come up with ideas of what we need/want
What do current search tools not provide our users
Survey of what is available, who's using it (could generate possible presenters for conf.)
Also, continue to tag useful Web resources in Del.icio.us (account info on Ella). Tags to be used are fed_articles and fed_examples. Also, tag with name of the tool (e.g. Webfeat).
To do:
David will review libraries' information on Five Colleges Inc. website.
Rebecca will contact Diane Hillmann re: Future of Cataloging workshop.
David will confirm Five Colleges as location for spring DEDCC meetings.
Everyone will send Mary any topics they'd like to be included in a summer/fall (un)conference (by January 9).
Mary will dig out the survey from last year and see if there is information that might apply to this year's efforts [done!]
Emily will draft a question about people's preference re: format of possible conference.
Mary will incorporate people's suggestions, topics from last survey, and notes from flip chart into a new survey, to be sent out January 12 with a follow-up on January 19.
Janet will research the dates of notable conferences between May and August that might affect the timing of our potential event.
Everyone will continue to research federated search products and examples and add sources to the wiki and/or to the DEDCC Delicious account.
Next meeting: Wednesday, January 21, 3:00 pm, Five Colleges (pending confirmation)
