Meeting Notes

Five Colleges DEDCC
October 22, 2008, 3:30-5:00 pm

Present: Emily Alling, Rachel Beckwith, Janet Ewing, Rebecca Henning (recorder), David Podboy (chair), Mary Stettner. Guest: Jodi Schneider

Discussion about the recent brown bag: Turnout was low (15), but the consensus was that it was still worth doing. Next time we will send out more reminders as we get closer to the event, and try scheduling it later in the semester.

Archiving meeting minutes: Rachel will move minutes that are older than the current year to the “Archive” page within the DEDCC website :
http://www.fivecolleges.edu/sites/libraries_dedcc/archive/

We noted that the Five College Libraries guide (pdf) that is located at http://www.fivecolleges.edu/libraries/
is very out of date (2004-2005). Janet will investigate having it updated or removed. She will also look into the idea of a chart on the Five College site with links to basic information about each of the libraries.

FCLC update: Chris was unable to be at the meeting due to scheduling conflicts. The brief update he gave David acknowledged the need to put Aquabrowser on the back burner for now. DEDCC intends to keep monitoring next generation cataloging issues and watch how the WorldCatLocal implementation progresses at Amherst and UMass. Rachel said that Hampshire was disappointed that we could not pursue Aquabrowser.

David mentioned a blog post about a VuFind and SOPAC2 presentation at Internet Librarian:

The presentation links will probably be posted soon at the IL2008 web site: http://www.infotoday.com/il2008/

DEDCC membership: Marilyn has stepped down due to other commitments. Two names that were floated as suggestions for the FCLC were Kelcy Shepherd (UMass) and Stephanie Schmitt (newly hired Five Colleges Aleph manager, who will be starting in January).

Jodi Schneider (Amherst) joined us at 4:15 and we discussed the possibilities of hosting an “unconference” for the New England regional iteration of Code4Lib. Early thoughts on dates are late spring or early summer (May or June?) The Red Barn at Hampshire might be a good location, and Rachel will gather information about that. The parts that we might be able to help with are location, advertising, food, and wireless access. Charging a small amount ( or ) might defray costs. Using the Code4Lib wiki page to gather a ballpark number of attendees would be important. (See http://ne.code4lib.org/wiki/ ) This planning is all in the early investigation stage—once we have more information we may make a proposal to FCLC.

Brainstorming next projects: The majority of the meeting (before and after Jodi’s visit) was spent brainstorming the following list of project ideas.

Catalog enhancements
IM widget
Texting from catalog (call numbers to a cell phone?)
Cellphone or PDA catalog apps (see http://web.simmons.edu/~fox/pda/ for more info)
Aleph spellcheck (being worked on?)
RDA
Future of cataloging mini-workshop
Event with Code4Lib
Robert Darnton (was at MHC last year)

(list, cont.)
Web 2.0 tools (sustainability? How to determine if worth time and effort?)
Map/catalog mashups (see example at http://library.osu.edu/sites/finearts/ )
Web 2.0 for Five College collaboration (examples: google docs, ning)
Research plugins
Future of Open Source (may become even more important if startups go under in economy)
Staffing
Viability
How to think about TCO (total cost of ownership)
Five College collaboration
Federated Search
FRBRization
Digitization projects
OCA (http://www.opencontentalliance.org/ )
Digital preservation
Institutional repositories

For the agenda for next meeting: more on Code4Lib and more discussion and ranking of project ideas.

Action items:

- Janet will look into having a chart added to the Five College website
- Rachel will contact the Red Barn for information on holding Code4Lib there
