DEDCC meeting minutes for Friday, February 22, 2008
Five Colleges

Attendees:
Janet Ewing (chair), Sika Berger, Marilyn Billings, Rebecca Henning, Anne C. More, Mary Stettner (minutes taker)

March meeting:
change of date and location to Thursday, March 13th. Time and location pending.

FCLC update:
Chris Loring sent a brief note to Janet mentioning directors supported approach DEDCC is taking so far in looking into next generation catalogs and bringing them new info. The directors’ next meeting is March 3rd. Aleph reps will be attending and, though that’s likely to take up the whole meeting, Janet would still like to get a preliminary scan of Next Gen catalog possibilities to the directors prior to next meeting in case they have time to discuss that topic. Need to pull this document together by next week.

Brown bag recap:
About 18 people attended. Positive feedback from director in attendance. Good opportunity to broaden thinking outside of usual area of work. Possibly plan another late spring/early summer brown bag with presenters who have gone to more recent conferences.

NextGen catalogs discussion:
Suggestions for revising summary document on Next Generation Library Resource Interface Systems created by Sika and Marilyn for presentation to FCLC:
• Add descriptive sentence or two to products missing descriptions (Marilyn adding info for Aquabrowser, Janet for Primo)
• Turn borders on so info in tables easier to read
• Put hosted OCLC into commercial grouping
• Add Viewfind using solr to list (Marilyn) – open source, all beta, being tested by several institutions
• Add cover page (Janet writing this with aim of getting it to directors by Wed. of next week) to document with following information:
o Opening paragraph explaining the scope – noting the options that rise to the top at first pass (WorldCat Local, Aquabrowser for example as viable candidates for implementation in the short term) and asking for directors’ ok to further investigate these. For long-term may want to keep an eye on options like Xtensible catalog – potential to have higher functionality but not as easy or comparatively inexpensive to implement in the short term.
o Additional paragraph suggesting rough process (narrowing field, scheduling vendor demos perhaps for late April or early summer?) and asking for timeline.

Future projects/ideas/concerns?:
• Sika suggested federated searching

Action items:
• Marilyn and Janet adding descriptive blurbs to Next Generation document for directors, Janet writing cover page
• Everyone read New Horizon report for next meeting
