Note: In addition to account books, the collection contains agricultural journals and day books. The guide is arranged alphabetically by individual's last name. The guide consists of photocopies of entries from the library's card catalog. In addition to the individual's name, each entry lists the business or businesses engaged in by the individual and a date span. Some trades figuring prominently include tavern keepers, blacksmiths, carpenters, sawyers, grocers, tanners, physicians, hatmakers, cobblers, and weavers. Several of the account books in this collection are photocopies or microfilmed copies of manuscripts held by other repositories; in such cases, this information is noted on the card.

Note: The Ashley Family Papers contain materials relating to nine members of that family. Four individuals, all Deerfield residents, are well represented. Material includes: over 200 sermons and notes by Jonathan Ashley (1712–1780), who had Tory sympathies during the Revolutionary War; correspondence and business records of Elihu Ashley (1750–1817), a physician in Deerfield; personal correspondence of Mary Williams Ashley (1752–1831), consisting mostly of letters from her husband, the above-mentioned Elihu; and papers relating to the estate and personal finances of Thomas Ashley (1776–1848). The guide contains a chart showing relationships of family members represented in the papers. Correspondence is arranged by addressee. The papers are supplemented by recent collateral material, consisting primarily of genealogical writings and newspaper retrospectives.

Note: The George Sheldon Papers reflect his antiquarian and historical interests. More than half of the collection is made up of correspondence, much of it to historical societies, libraries, and museums, as well as individuals who shared his interest in these subjects. In addition, Sheldon was state secretary to the Know-Nothing Party during its brief but significant ascendancy in Massachusetts, active in the Freesoil Movement, and an ardent abolitionist. The bulk of the collection dates from 1860 to 1916.

Note: The Abell Family Papers consist of four folders of material relating to three subjects. There are two folders of Civil War letters from George Austin Abell of Conway, Massachusetts, to members of his family. They were written while he served in the Union Army, 1862–1864. Many are addressed to his brother Lewis, also of Conway. These folders contain his honorable discharge in November 1864, and a certificate granting his widow, Alice Holcomb Abell, a pension in 1911. The second group contains legal documents dated 1801–1836 relating to Joshua Abell Sr. of Goshen, Massachusetts, his son, and two grandsons, all of that town. The last folder contains genealogical material relating to the Abell family in the first decades of the 20th century.
