Note: The corporation was formed in 1927 to organize the composition, editing, and publication of the Encyclopaedia of Social Sciences. It originated as a jointly sponsored project of 10 professional associations including the American Anthropological Association, the American Historical Association, the American Political Science Association, the American Psychological Association, and the National Education Association. Placed under the leadership of Edwin R.A. Seligman as editor in chief, Alvin Johnson served as associate editor and the MacMillan Company published the work. The records consist of correspondence; original manuscripts, translations, and drafts of articles; organizational files; and business records. Widely supported by the American and European intellectual communities of the time, correspondents and contributors include many names famous in the social sciences.

Note: In 1958, the presidents of Amherst, Mount Holyoke, and Smith Colleges and the University of Massachusetts appointed this faculty committee to develop plans “for a new experimental college located in close proximity to the four institutions, aimed at producing education of the highest quality at a minimum cost per student and with as small a faculty relative to the size of the student body as new methods of instruction and new administrative procedures can make possible” (from the charge to the committee). The New College Plan, the final report of the committee, was produced in November 1958. This document represents the initial educational blueprint for Hampshire College.
